This absurdist classic is often viewed as a meditation on the spread of fascism. In the world of the play, fascism is a virus that transforms people into rhinoceroses. Jeanne, the sensible but oppressive aunt of the central character, falls victim to this phenomenon. She becomes ill and transforms into a rhinoceros before our very eyes.
