Surrounded by married friends on his 35th birthday, Bobby contemplates his status as a bachelor. Marriage perplexes him. Through episodic vignettes, he observes his friends and the many forms in which marriage manifests. The last person he consults is the unhappy, alcoholic Joanne, famous for her eleven-o’clock number Ladies Who Lunch. In many ways, she embodies what he fears most: Growing old stuck in an unfulfilling marriage and approaching the inevitable with all-encompassing regret.
